Business Casual Superstar: A Floaty, Floral Maxi Dress

I’ve really been into the maxi dress lately, and they’re a great option for these hot summer days. They’re long and loose and billowy and supremely comfortable, but sometimes, they seem a little too … beachy for the office. They’re great cover-ups over your bathing suit, they’re great for strolling along the boardwalk before sunset, and they’re great for a backyard lunch party, but some maxi dresses just seem a little too casual for the office.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to fix that. It’s called the shrug, and it’s a familiar sight in my closet. Observe:

Lauren Conrad Floral Maxi Dress ………. $40.80
Elle Scalloped Shrug in Slate ………. $20
Rocket Dog Flats in Grey ………. $34.95

Shrugs are great, mainly because they’re not sweaters. There’s nothing worse than putting on a cute, breezy maxi dress … and then having to pull on a cardigan just to wear it in to the office. Shrugs offer the sleeves and coverage without being as hot as a sweater or cardigan in the summer. There are slub cardigans, too, which are impossibly lightweight – it doesn’t even feel like you’re wearing anything on top of the dress.

And speaking of the dress – I thought it was just adorable. Lauren Conrad has been surprising me with her collection for Kohl’s. Most of it is totally wearable, unlike most celebrity fashion lines for mass retailers like Kohl’s, Target, KMart, etc. (I remember being so excited by the Rodarte for Target line, and then so, so disappointed. That also had something to do with the fact that the ONLY thing I actually wanted to buy from the collection, an adorable pink top with sheer panels and a bow, was sold out. Boo.)

The dress does have that halter top thing going on, which is where the shrug comes in. Once you slip on that shrug, that beachy halter doesn’t matter.

I threw in a pair of grey flats to match the sweater, and that’s all there is to it!

At first I was really wary of maxi dresses because I'm 5'4, but recently I've started thinking I should give them another chance (or at least go try one on!). They seem like the perfect answer to summer's hottest days.

@annedreshfield Oh my gosh, yes please give the maxi dress a chance! The main time you have to worry about height with clothing is when pants/skirts/dresses reach mid-calf. Now THAT'S when you need to be wary!
