Student Fashion: The A-Line Skirt

Skirts and I are not the best of friends, but I still love them.  They are beautiful and non-restrictive, but with long legs and a curvy bottom, I have a hard time finding a flattering look.  Minis and maxis are too short; pencils are too tight; and tutus and bubble skirts should be restricted to high school proms.  So what’s a short pear-shaped girl to do? Slip into an A-line!

I love A-line skirts for two main reasons:

  1. They tend to be midi length.
  2. They are never to tight nor too full.

Basically they are the Goldilocks of skirts.  Just look at how adorable Ginnifer Goodwin is in her red midi a-line skirt.  Her outfit is on-point for a casual work setting.

But A-line skirts aren’t just for curvy long-legged girls.  Their perfect cut, length and fullness flatter a variety of shapes and sizes. Plus they are the most fun to twirl in.

A black pleated skirt such as the Lilian Pleated A-Line Black Skirt, is an office staple.  It can go with everything from a silk button up and blazer to a printed blouse and ballet flats.

You can even play with the classics by going for a pleated skirt in a fun color or pattern such as the polka dotted Halogen Pleat Midi Skirt from Nordstrom.

Make a statement with abstract patterns in bright colors such as the Lucy Pairs Skirt from Bloomingdale’s or the Ted Baker London ‘Glitch’ Floral Print A-Line Skirt.

Keep the tops and accessories simple with a solid colored blouse and heels, or a short gold chain necklace.

Playing with texture and detail brings variety to your look. Some great textured and detailed pieces are the JOA Polka Dot Midi Skirt and the Kate Spade New York ‘Lee’ Bow Detail A-Line Skirt.

Try mixing up the texture of the whole outfit.  Wear these pieces with a silk or cotton top, velvet shoes and a leather bag.
