Think the three-piece suit is too fancy for the office? Think again.
Yes I know that Matthew McConaughey and Liam Hemsworth don’t show up to your average every-day office, but what I’d like to point out is that they are both wearing three-piece suits in a more casual way. A way that in fact could easily be worn to that previously mentioned every-day office. Notice the thicker-soled shoes? And the neutral-toned pocket square? And no ties? Take note, take note.
There are other ways you can “dress down” the classic combination. I like how the sort of scruffy look below with the brown belt, slightly darker vest and pattern mixing with the shirt and tie. The casual tones of the shirt, tie and belt offset the more upscale edge of the rest of the suit. I’ll leave the pink socks as optional.
If you want to try the look, consider wearing a sweater vest with a two-piece suit and play with a contrasting belt or shoes. Or don a striped shirt with a white undershirt and no tie. Or sport a casual thinner tie. You have options. I know men don’t hear that often with work wear, but the three-piece suit gives you some layers to play with. Think about all the variations you can make with just one suit! See, women aren’t the only one who can play dress up.
I’m not saying you have to change up the classic three-piece look if that is your preferred ensemble. A classic is always classic. They wouldn’t feature them in the likes of Mad Men and Downton Abbey if they weren’t. The choice and styling are up to you.
In fact, you could always take another celebrity approach…
