Business attire is usually considered complete with phone, briefcase, and business cards. The latter however I feel has been sadly neglected at many business functions throughout the years. Business cards are important, but so is what you carry them in. I have seen the form of a business card holder in every form from the paper clip to the rubber band, both of which are not business appropriate.
The business card holder is as important accessory as a man’s tie or woman’s purse. It also is a conversation piece. If you have a fantastic handbag, someone may stop you and inquire as to where you purchased it. If you then take out your business cards wrapped in a rubber band, then you immediately took that fashionable first impression down to the curiosity of whether all of your paycheck went to the bag so you couldn’t afford a decent business card holder.
For those who already own business card holders, take note on what it says about you and your business. I personally don’t like leather holders as they can gap at the seams and they’re difficult to retrieve your card from. My favorite holders are the metal snap enclosure options with either intital engraving or a statement design. Please note, that a statement design shouldn’t say something about you as a person – it should say something about your business. So keep the golf tee holder and the polka-dot holder at home (that is unless you work at a golf course or gift shop) and opt for a holder that makes a strong and professional business statement. Plus you can inherit another networking conversation piece.
