The Working Man: The Skinny Tie – Trend, Style or Fashion Takeover?

by Rachel Yeomans | November 3rd, 2010

This past month I was given a challenge regarding men’s work fashion – addressing the battle of the skinny tie. This is a trend I have noticed popping up in men’s fashion quite frequently as of late particularly with hipster fashion and some Mad Men looks. However apparently this trend has battled the standard 3-inch tie out of retailers’ grasps! The man who shared this information with me stated very plainly, “You would be surprised just how hard it is to find a 3-inch wide black wool textured tie.” How right he was.

Now there really isn’t anything wrong with the skinny tie – the man I was speaking with merely pointed out that his body type doesn’t work with skinny ties. I personally admit I am not a big fan of the skinny tie look as it does lean a bit too casual for my taste. Again that is just a personal preference – if your style leans towards that look, then make sure the ties are made well and you wear them with well-matched shirts with narrow collars. Bottom line, make sure it’s appropriate both in style and fitting your office dress code.

Now back to the challenge at hand. Is it impossible finding a 3-inch tie? Of course not. However a 3-inch black wool (and not wool and silk combo mind you) textured tie…now that has been difficult! The ties below I found at Nordstrom in taupe and charcoal. Both three inches wide, both wool, and both textured. No they’re not black, but they are both complimentary companions.

Funny enough, that when Googling ‘black wool tie’, the search comes up with most results stating, “Selling skinny black wool ties!” – there’s even a site dedicated to just selling skinny ties. I wonder if skinny ties are indeed ahead in the Darwinian tie race. Then…with a few more mouse clicks…there it was… EUREKA! JACKPOT!

It’s black. It’s wool. And it’s…2 3/4 inches.

So here’s my question. Does that 1/4 inch serve as a deal breaker? Or does the skinny tie reign yet again?
