We in the working world love Friday. Not only because it heralds the weekend, but also because it is the one day a week that we can tout casual attire at the workplace. When discussing my love of Casual Friday with a friend, she posed the question, “Well what if you have a date on Friday night right after work?” What a fantastic question! Unless you’re going to a pub, casual Friday jeans are not an ideal wardrobe piece for date-night.
It is possible to work your casual end-of-week attire into a chic and sexy date night ensemble. You may need to throw a separate pair of earrings or pumps into your handbag, but thankfully you don’t have to bring a whole gym bag with you to change in the office bathroom after work. Plus how embarrassing would it be to change from jeans and a blouse into a “why hello there” outfit and have your boss catch you in it before you are able to run into the elevator on your way out?
If you are in line for a first date this Friday, first of all don’t wear jeans. If you’re going to a nice dinner or event, I’d suggest skinny black slacks with a chic and classic top. Neutral colors will work perfectly in the office so you don’t have to worry about sticking out or feeling uncomfortable in front of your coworkers. And take the classic look and sex it up a bit with some statement colored shoes and jewelry. One thing to note however, the statement accessories are exactly that: statements. Make sure you know what kind of statement you want to make. This is a first date and you probably don’t want to scare your date away with all of your power and authority. We all know you have it, but it may be smart to flaunt it in stages versus all at once. Try a bold but romantic statement – I love the above look’s take on the red shoes having a slight ruffle with the vintage floral earrings to give the bold and powerful outfit a romantic and pretty demeanor. It is a date; you do want to look pretty don’t you?
Now, what if you have a date at the opera or or black tie affair? In that case you may need to forget the casual this Friday and instead work with glam. Friday’s don’t always need to signify casual; they can easily be celebrated as a prequel to a fashionable night out! Of course you may not feel the most comfortable working in a ball gown. I suggest a below-the-knee classy dress – nothing overly sexy – and pairing it with a cape swear like above or a blazer to dress it down a bit. And bring a bag that can hold what you need for work and can transcend from work to evening – in the work to outing scenario, I suggest leaving the clutch at home.
No matter where you go on a Friday night, with the simple addition or subtraction of a few accessories or footwear, you can transcend yourself into any situation without conveying the image of someone who just came straight from the office. Now that’s working the phrase “TGIF”!
