TheWorkingWardrobe Talks with Dawn Del Russo on Her New Book and Her Timeless Style

Do you ever stand in front of your closet in the morning and wonder what you are going to wear that day, and then in a fit of frustration you grab the same suit you always wear and promise to be more stylish the following day? Probably more often than you care to admit. Dawn Del Del Russo, Bella Dawn boutique owner and fashion stylist, knows this problem well. In fact, she wrote an entire book on the matter.

101 Glam Girl Ways to an Ultra Chic Lifestyle, to be released this fall, provides quick cheeky tips to living your life with a little bit of swank. Del Russo said that she wanted the book not be overwhelming, so the book is comprised of a series of quick tips accompanied by fashionable illustrations by Barbara Ann Scarrillo making it easy to ready and enjoyable to follow. However, Del Russo said the book is not just about fashion tips.

“It’s not just about what you are wearing,” said Del Russo. “It’s about believing in yourself. We don’t just work on appearance, we go deeper to make you feel better on the inside. It starts with the clothing but it’s important to hit that confidence.”

That confidence happened to serve as the inspiration for her book. Del Russo was 23 when she started her own business, an age when most individuals are getting their feet wet in the workforce and confronting the challenges that workforce puts forth. “I’ve gone through that and I want to convey that through my work and through the book.”

Seven years ago, Del Russo went to a trade show and gathered some designers to attend a party at her house – “actually it was my parent’s house,” Del Russo added. From that party, Del Russo began helping her friends dress for a wide range of situations from going out to a party to the job interview. Del Russo took the money she saved from high school and college graduation and put it into her boutique, Bella Dawn, which offered both clothing sales and her style tips. At that time, the style tips were free. Now Del Russo spends most of her time commuting into New York City from her base in New Jersey for her stylist services and her boutique is now available by appointment only. However you can still peruse her boutique items on the boutique website, www.belladawn.com.

Del Russo started the e-commerce portion of her website five years ago. Around two years ago, she sat down to write a post on her blog on the top 10 ways to lead a chic lifestyle. “I started with a Word document, and then I thought that it would be cute to do sketches, and it just went from there.” Del Russo admitted that the tips in her book came very easy to her as they come from her daily discourse with her clients. What she didn’t expect from writing the book is that it led to inspiration for other books.

“Styling a lifestyle“ is the concept Del Russo is working with next to continue her literary career. “I want to create the whole package,” she said. “I want to use fashion as a way to do that.” Besides the book, Del Russo also writes for several fashion sites including BettyConfidential.com, ChicGalleria.com, and most recently RunningWithHeels.com. She and her sister, make-up artist Denise Del Del Russo, also launched a website together entitled IWanttoWear.com.

For the working woman, Del Russo said that the primary advice she would provide is to make sure that all of your clothing is tailored to fit you. That tailoring may be as miniscule as the sleeve-length or the bust line, but just that little bit of tailoring can make your attire the perfect work attire. She also suggested incorporating a “look book” into your daily activities.

“Find pictures that you like be it in a magazine or on the computer,” says Del Russo, “and take those pictures and put them together in a binder or notebook.” Doing this can help not only with shopping for looks, but also assisting with that constant dilemma of standing in front of your closet in the morning and not knowing what to wear. Instead of grabbing that suit you wear every other day, you can now find items in your closet that matches a favorite look, and then you can put together an outfit that makes you feel stylish and, most importantly, confident.
