I’m one who has always preferred open windows and fresh air to air conditioning. However there is a very clear stopping point when air conditioning is almost necessary (that is if I actually want to have a good night’s sleep), and that is when the air outside is actually hotter than the air inside. That’s when the AC units go in.
Unfortunately for me, I’m still picking things up for my apartment as I need them. Air conditioning units were on the list…but not quite yet purchased. So remember when the temperatures went from mid-70s to mid-90s and the humidity sky rocketed? Yeah, I was quite quite cranky that week. And I went straight to my computer to purchase those air cooling machines.
Note to those who live in Chicago. If you purchase any home electronics, I advise doing so through abt. Not only do they have some of the most competitive pricing, they also deliver for free throughout Chicagoland. And the very nice delivery truck drivers bring it up to your apartment and don’t just leave it in your vestibule.
Abt does offer installation services as well, and if I didn’t have a friend’s husband offer to install my AC units for me, I would have gladly paid the fee.
My brand new, energy star rated, timer-equipped AC units arrived last Thursday. You may have seen my enthusiastic Instagram photo of said units…and I may have tweeted that waiting for my AC units to be delivered felt like the equivalent of waiting for a crush to call. Yes, this delivery was very important to me.
My friend and her husband came over that Saturday. The installation was quick and easy, and cool air was flowing through my apartment within 20 minutes! I then promptly took them both out for a big thank-you brunch. Worth every penny and still less expensive than installation services.
Unfortunately I did forget that running a vacuum cleaner while the AC is running does cause circuit breakage. So I had an interesting adventure in my cavernous apartment basement trying to find my circuit breaker box. Luckily my downstairs neighbor was home to show me which dark corner they were hidden in. I shall continue the theme of thank you gifting by buying him a six-pack.
So here I am, after a great cool night’s sleep, writing on my couch and the AC unit blasting along with my Spotify radio.
Alas, Fitzgerald is terrified of the noise; I’m hoping he’ll get used to it until I can open the windows again. I’ll buy him some cat nip.
