Art Institute of Chicago & Collaberaction Theatre Company Gave Friday Happy Hour a Whole New Dimension
This past Friday was illuminated from the Chicago lakefront, even through the rain. For the first time since the opening of the Chicago Art Institute’s new Modern Wing addition, the theatrical, musical, artistic and fashionable event, “After Dark”, took the hours of happy hour well into the evening among the recently unveiled marvels of modern art and renowned architecture. Akin to the Museum of Contemporary Art’s “First Friday’s”, After Dark is an event held regularly at the Chicago Art Institute that offers food, drink and a social scene amidst the artwork within an iconic museum. However, unlike First Friday, After Dark is held only once a quarter, is not even close to the “meat market” feeling as that of First Friday, and works in collaboration with Chicago Theatre Company, Collaberaction. Throughout the evening, actors and performers from Collaberaction were seen as individuals in character scattered around the museum or in groups performing ensemble acts on the main staircase. Before the opening of the Modern Wing, After Dark was held in a smaller room in the Chicago museum. It was dark, cozy and seemed appropriate for the crowd one would expect to encounter wandering the halls of the Art Institute. However the Modern Wing touted its label on this event: It took it to the modern age. Bright lights, enthusiastic music and a much broader generation spectrum filled the halls and galleries with the accompaniment of food and drink. Despite the Midwest weather, Chicago is always able to show its city a great time.
