There are certain things that I’m not allowed to even try on in stores because I already own enough of that trend. Stripes? As much as it pains me to do so, I try to avoid even looking at them because I adore anything with a stripe on it. Color-blocking? Love the preppy-cool vibe, but I’ve already bought some great pieces and should probably stay away. Anything gray? I love the contrast against my coloring, especially when I wear a bold lip, but I own enough gray to start inching my way from California to New York.
Polka dots? Oh, don’t even get me started!
I love polka dots, especially when they’re in a bright splash of color (yes, preppy again!), when they’re in varying sizes, or when they feel three dimensional on the fabric. In fact, the coveted working look I have for you today is the newest iteration of a polka dot blouse I already have: J.Crew’s Blythe blouse in polka dot. I was actually featured on The Working Wardrobe in the “What I Wore to Work” series in this very top (check it out here!), and I’m wearing it as I type this. Quite simply: I adore this shirt.
Look closely at the print. Zoom in. Do you see little white polka dots flashing whenever you move your eyes? You might think that’s just a trick the blue polka dots are playing on you, but the white polka dots are actually sewn onto the underside of the shirt, while the blue polka dots are printed on the fabric. The white polka dots offer a bit of texture, a fun play on your eyes, and that special 3D quality that makes what might be a plain (but very cute) polka dot shirt literally pop!
The Blythe blouse always feels crisp, pulled together, and a simple kind of chic, whether I’m wearing it tucked into dark jeans with a skinny belt (today’s outfit, and the outfit that was featured on this site), or with a dark pencil skirt, slim trousers, or even with shorts, as shown above. The fabric is so soft and easy to work with — I always find myself rolling up the sleeves to show off a flash of gold jewelry against the stark white and blue dots. I also love the fact that this button-down is easy to wear, since I’m rather curvy. There’s no gaping, and the double buttons help to conceal any gaping that might occur. Simple, easy, and chic!
Also, I do suggest that you pair this shirt with a bold lipstick: Today, I’ll be swiping on MAC’s Chatterbox lipstick, which is a bright, perfectly pretty pink.
So, what do you think of the Blythe blouse in polka dots? For me, this is a working wardrobe workhorse!
