Business Casual: The Shirt Dress for Under $100

by Jesse Wurm | September 20th, 2012

The shirt dress I feel is the most versatile, comfortable and flattering look this season. The item can easily go from casual to office or date-ready with the addition of some simple accessories and a change of shoes. You’ll be able to wear these dresses often, plus they’re not only a fashionable choice, they’re economical.

With their tailored lines and button fastenings, shirt dresses accentuate your curves. If needed, belts can add additional shape and color to the dress, in fact some even come with their own belts. A belt may help you look taller and thinner because it doesn’t break up the line of your body. My favorite part about this garment is that you can layer it. Wear a camisole underneath and unbutton the top of the dress to let it show. Or choose a cardigan, vest or blazer with a pop of color to add a contrasting hue.

I love this Therapy Pleat Skirt Dress ($49); it’s knee length, has a shirt collar, is sleeveless, has button fastenings and fitted waist. It is perfect for any board meeting or appointment with clients. I’ve paired it with this gray and black F&F Herringbone Blazer ($45) to add a streamlined finished look.

Pair this outfit with simple jewelry; polished pieces add just the right amount of interest without appearing overdone. Cuffs, bangles and long necklaces are the ultimate accessories. Colorful chunk earrings also add a nice touch.  For footwear, ballet flats are perfect for the casual look. For more formal events pair the shirt dress with knee high boots or platform heels. Scarves, tights and leggings are other options as well. No matter the accessory, the look speaks for itself. Work it!

@theworkwardrobe I love this! My office is super casual, so I'm always looking for things to wear to outside events to look more polished.

@hdmuseum Yay, I'm so glad, thank you! If you end up sporting the look, we'd love to see a pic!
