Beauty 101: CoverGirl XL Nail Gel

What is it about painted nails? For me, it’s the finishing touch on an outfit, a flash of color as you type, hand off an important memo, or take notes during a meeting. As a life-long nervous nail biter, nail polish helps me leave my nails alone. Depending on the season, I’ll paint my nails pretty much any color, though I’ve been known to avoid yellow or green. Thankfully, I work in a more casual office setting, so my coworkers are more likely to comment on my polish color rather than lift an eyebrow.

While I like changing up my colors fairly often, that doesn’t mean I like to paint my nails every few days. I look for nail polish formulas that are long-lasting, resist chips, and are easy to apply. Enter the CoverGirl XL Nail Gel, a new formula from CoverGirl that won’t break the bank!

Offered in a variety of bright and bold colors, I gravitated immediately toward the darker hues for fall. I currently have Bodacious Berry on both my fingers and toes, and the polish is gorgeous! In some lights, it looks like a stunning deep purple, in others, it turns navy, and others, jet black.

CoverGirl claims that their new XL Nail Gel gives you a gel-like look without the hassle of the salon or UV lights. Unlike other gel polishes I’ve tried, the formula is very much like a normal polish – just the right consistency, easy to apply, and nearly opaque in one coat. The gel polish cures itself with any kind of light (indoor or outdoor) and doesn’t require a top coat, though I always top mine off with Seche Vite.

The best part? This nail polish lasts. Most dark polishes chip quickly on me, since I’m not careful with my hands or nails in my day-to-day life, and this polish resists that. CoverGirl claims the polish will last for up to 7 days, and I’ve gotten 5 out of it so far, which I think is pretty good for a very dark, high-maintenance polish. I might just have to go back for a few other colors – in fact, I’ve got my eye on Rotund Raspberry for a gorgeous fall color, and Whole Lotta Guava for my toes and summertime! The only thing I would ask for would be more subdued colors – I’d love a nude from this collection!
