The history books show that culottes, the trending wide leg pants that highly resemble a skirt, were first worn by upper-class European gentlemen throughout the Renaissance and early 19th century. However, just like the Topshop Buckle Monk Shoe I profiled a few weeks back, some of the best trends are borrowed from the boys and culottes are no exception.
Culottes come in many different styles and there wasn’t a runway in sight during the spring/summer 2014 runway shows that didn’t prove this. Despite their incredibly individual and diverse styles, Emporio Armani, Alexander Wang and Proenza Scholer, among others, all showed culottes. From relaxed cotton culottes with elastic waistbands to edgier culottes with intricate pocket details and fabric in vibrant colors made from silk, there’s literally culottes for every style and occasion, including the office.
Most recently, I was impressed with ASOS Warehouse Soft Pleat Culotte. Made from a woven poly fabric, in a high-rise waist silhouette, with side pockets and a soft pleated finish, this pair of culottes are modern, sleek and super appropriate for your working wardrobe.
Additionally these culottes from ASOS are the perfect transitional piece between summer and fall, which, with the end of August approaching and September fashion magazines making their way to the newsstands, is definitely an issue on the forefront of every fashionista’s mind. Because they hit below the knee, yet are still in a light weight fabric, they can be comfortable with a short sleeve blouse and flats or with a blazer and booties.
With celebrities and style icons such as Kate Hudson, Victoria Beckham, Leandra Medine of the Man Repeller and more, rocking culottes there’s no denying that the skirt-like pant trend is at an all time high. Now it’s time to take the culottes trend from the runway and the pages of the tabloids to the real world and show your office you know your fashion.
